Methodology

Every figure on this site is computed from published tax law — nothing is estimated, surveyed or averaged. This page defines the model.

The model (v1)
Assumptions

Single filer · standard deduction · wage income only · no dependents · no pre-tax benefits (401(k), health premiums) · no tax credits beyond state personal exemptions/credits as listed in each state's tax tables. Figures are annual tax liability translated to per-period amounts — actual per-check withholding varies with your W-4.

Federal income tax

Taxable income = gross − $16,100 standard deduction (single, 2026). Tax = marginal walk of the seven 2026 IRS brackets (Rev. Proc. 2025-32).

FICA

Social Security 6.2% on wages up to $184,500 (2026 SSA wage base) + Medicare 1.45% on all wages + 0.9% Additional Medicare Tax on wages above $200,000 (single).

State income tax

Taxable income = gross − state standard deduction − personal exemption (where the state defines them); tax = marginal walk of the state's 2026 brackets; exemption credits subtracted from tax. Bracket data: each state's revenue code as compiled by the Tax Foundation (February 2026 edition).

Known limitations

Local income taxes (NYC, Maryland counties, Ohio municipalities, etc.) are NOT included — a disclosed v1 limitation. Married filing statuses, itemized deductions and credits (EITC, child tax credit) are out of scope. Washington's capital-gains tax does not apply to wages and is excluded.
